The year in music continues as we make our way into March. And with this series, I briefly go over my top and bottom 3 songs of the month. I listened to a lot of truly great songs. In fact, the track record was so good, that I only heard a handful of terrible songs. Keep in mind, this is entirely based on my experience during the month. I am fully aware that a lot of garbage music comes out every day. This series merely takes into account what I listened to during the given month. Click here to read the last one. Enjoy!
THE TOP 3
Genre: Industrial Metal
The legendary German metal band is back after a ten year hiatus, and boy, what a return! I will admit that I'm not a huge fan of their work, but I absolutely admire what they do. And "DEUTSCHLAND" is a killer return. It has a great riff with a nice pulsing drum beat. It has a groove that is great for headbanging. And the vocals are the perfect mix of menacing and campy. Classic Rammstein. It's an ear-worm of a song and even though I know little to no German, I still find myself chanting some of the phrases in my spare time. If you're a fan of Rammstein, then I'm sure you'll like this one. It's a lot of fun.
Genre: Alternative Rock
This song is weird. It's a genre hodgepodge, mixing the stylings of alternative, post-hardcore, electronica, jazz, new age, and Nintendo 64-esque pan flute melodies. It's a strange arrangement of sounds, but it works so well. This is a gorgeous song, with beautifully passionate vocals, great use of electronics, and a powerful chorus. Plus, the solo is a huge surprise, and I love it. I won't even say what instrument plays the solo because of how different it is. This is an excellently crafted song. It's so unique and different, and I madly respect it. It's a mess of sounds and styles that come together to make one whole song, and it works wonders.
Genre: Rap
This is the kind of rap music I absolutely adore. The beat is fantastic, with a minimalist drum pattern backing up a beautifully simple yet powerful piano melody. It's very jazzy, smooth, and captivating. The chorus is full of soul and subtlety, with the perfect amount of repetition. This song has an old soul to it, and I madly respect it. The rapping is great, the storytelling is phenomenal, and the production is gripping. Even the spoken word passage at the end of the song is absolutely riveting. This song is over six minutes long, but it goes by so quickly. I feel like this is a song that most everyone can appreciate. Even if you're not a fan of this genre, I highly recommend it. As of right now, it's one of my absolute favorite songs of the year. I know it's a bold claim since we're so early into the year, but it's true. Absolutely fantastic track.

THE BOTTOM 3
Genre: Indie Pop
AJR is the epitome of the obnoxious "look at how quirky I am" mentality. I find a lot of their music to be very annoying and their lyrics very cringy. While I don't think this is their worst song, "100 Bad Days" still embodies a lot of what turns me off from AJR. It has an overly bombastic and grating melody, corny lyrics, and boring progression. There's nothing here that I find remotely interesting. I don't hate this song, but it does absolutely nothing for me.

Like the last entry, I actually don't hate this song. Heck, I'd rather listen to this than "Robbery." However, I still don't like this song. This is essentially Juice WRLD's attempt at a Drake-style dance hall ballad. While I've never been a fan of Drake, I'd rather listen to his music than this. This sounds like a cheap imitation. I don't like the beat, the lyrics, or the overly whiny vocals, all of which have turned me off from his stuff in the past. It doesn't get as bad as "Robbery," but I still find this song annoying. It's not atrocious, but it's still not good. Like I said, I didn't hear a whole lot of garbage in March. So... that's something.

Choosing my number one worst song of this month was very easy for me. I have never liked Iggy Azalea, and "Sally Walker" is yet another terrible rap song from her. The beat is awful. It is a stereotypical "hey look I'm a badass" beat with no character. The piano sample is flimsy, and the tune overall sounds wholly unoriginal. The verses are full of not so great flows and not so great bars, with stupid lyrics like "bend it over, make it wobble, uh, gotta lotta buns," and "you would think it's gettin' evicted how my booty movin' (yeah) better yet, I need a U-Haul." It's not clever. It's just dumb. But the worst part of the song is definitely the hook. She takes the classic "Little Sally Walker" chant verbatim and raps it terribly. It is one of the corniest choruses from a rap song I've ever heard. This song is really bad, and it easily hits number one of the bottom three.
