2021 was the first year where I really payed attention to the new music being released. Because of that, I decided to give you my top 100 singles of 2021. All of these songs were released between January-November of 2021, with two songs being released in December of 2020. I know, that's kind of cheating, but November is really the last month of the music year cycle, so I'm counting them here.
Before we start, a few things to keep in mind: 1) I've included only one song per artist. That way, you get a wider variety of music. Plus, I don't want to overload the top ten with the same artist. You'll know what I mean when you read the article. 2) This list is entirely my opinion. See a song on here that you don't like? Well, that means I like it more than you. Don't see a song on here that you like? Either I don't like it as much as you or I didn't hear it. And 3) again, if you want to listen to the full playlist, which has every song here on Spotify, click here. If you want to listen to some of the songs but not the full playlist, then click on the song titles.
With all of that said, here is my top 100 favorite singles of 2021.

This is one of the most uplifting songs about heartbreak I've ever heard. I love the pulsing synth beat and how it contrasts with the tragic lyrics. It's quality music.
70. Lana Del Rey: "Chemtrails Over The Country Club"
Release Date: January 11
Album: Chemtrails over the Country Club
Genre: Art Pop / Singer-Songwriter
Lana Del Rey had a pretty hit or miss 2021, in my opinion. However, when she hit, she freaking KNOCKED it out of the park. This is one of those instances in which she did just that.
69. Chad VanGaalen: "Samurai Sword"
Release Date: January 28
Album: World's Most Stressed Out Gardener
Genre: Singer-Songwriter / Psychedelic Folk
This song is pure charm. I love the plucky acoustic guitar, the clinking percussion and the hilarious lyrics about a powerful and indestructible samurai sword being a loan from a friend. This song is delightful, and I highly recommend it.
68. Sloppy Jane: "Party Anthem"
Release Date: September 9
Album: Madison
Genre: Progressive Pop / Art Pop
This is wild. The orchestration is beautiful, and those vocals are out of this world. However, the song is just so STRANGE! I mean that in a good way, of course. It's an odd song, but it works. Listen to it for yourself and you'll see what I mean.
67. Beyoncé: "Be Alive"
Release Date: November 12
Album: King Richard (Movie Soundtrack)
Genre: Pop Soul
The tune itself is pretty good, but Beyoncé's vocals truly elevate this to fantastic. Seriously, this might be the best vocal performance I've ever heard from her on a song. It's insane.
66. Big Red Machine: "Renegade (feat. Taylor Swift)"
Release Date: July 2
Album: How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?
Genre: Indie Pop
You know, this indie folk sound really suits Taylor, and I'm glad she's indulging in it more, because this is great. It's a beautiful collaboration between her, Bon Iver and The National's Matt Berninger.
65. Spiritbox: "Circle With Me"
Release Date: April 30
Album: Eternal Blue

Djent has never been my thing. However, by adding a nice dose of atmospheric mood and melody, along with Courtney LaPlante's commanding yet beautiful vocals, and you get a fantastic banger of a metal track.
64. Doja Cat: "Kiss Me More (feat. SZA)"
Release Date: April 9

This was the bop of the summer for me. The guitar lick is fantastic, both Doja and SZA sound fantastic and the song as a whole just sounds sexy. It's a great time.

60. Richard Dawson & Circle: "Lily"
Release Date: September 13
Album: Henki
Genre: Art Rock / Progressive Rock
This is some fantastic 70s prog throwback music with a great riff, a soaring chorus and SO much camp! Every time I hear this song, I picture a D&D campaign where everyone is cosplaying as their characters and taking the game a little too seriously. It's amazing.
59. Wet Leg: "Chaise Longue"
Release Date: June 15
Album: Wet Leg (2022)
Genre: Indie Rock
I first heard this song on an alternative radio station in my hometown, and my first thought while listening was "this song is SO dumb! I freaking love it!" I love the riff, the stupidly catchy chorus, the humorous lyrics, the dry, almost talk-sing vocals, the energy... I love it all. I assign this song to butter my muffin.
58. Black Country, New Road: "Concorde"
Release Date: November 30
Album: Ants From Up There (2022)
Genre: Art Rock / Post-Punk
If this song is any indication, their upcoming album is going to be fantastic. This song is more passionate, bold and beautiful than any song off of their debut, and that album is one of my favorites of the year. This is one band to look out for.
57. Lizzy McAlpine: "erase me (feat. Jacob Collier)"
Release Date: November 17
Album: n/a
Genre: Folk Pop
Speaking of artists to look out for, where the hell did this woman come from? This is some of the most emotionally potent pop music I've heard all year! The production is fantastic, Lizzy's voice and writing are incredible and the Jacob Collier harmonies are a nice touch. I cannot wait to see what she does on a potential full album.
56. Remi Wolf: "Sexy Villain"
Release Date: September 8
Album: Juno
Genre: Contemporary R&B / Alt-Pop
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you some of the best vocal writing of the entire year. The way Remi sings, as well the notes she hits in the order she hits them, is so satisfying and sounds so good. On top of that, the spacey, slightly reggae production is smooth, beautiful and, you guessed it, sexy.
55. Gorillaz: "Meanwhile (feat. Jelani Blackman & Barrington Levy)"
Release Date: August 26
Album: Meanwhile (EP)
Genre: Dub / Dancehall / Pop Rap
It's cool hearing Gorillaz with a darker sound with their beat. It sounds like a Humanz track in tone, but with Plastic Beach style production and writing. Add a couple of solid features and a great 2-D hook, and you have yet another reminder as to why Gorillaz is one of my top 3 bands/artists of all time.
54. Ghost: "Hunter's Moon"
Release Date: September 30
Album: Halloween Kills (Movie Soundtrack)
Genre: Hard Rock / Heavy Metal / Pop Rock
Ghost has this uncanny ability to make their brand of metal so campy yet somehow kick so much ass. This song is no exception, as its tasty riff, excellent performances and glorious hook keep me coming back to headbang over and over again.
53. Villagers: "So Simpatico"
Release Date: July 1
Album: Fever Dreams
Genre: Indie Pop
This song is seven minutes of some of the most lush, serene, captivating and beautiful music I've heard this entire year. Every time I hear it, it takes me to a magical, wonderful place, and I love it. Also, the sax solo? Super tasty. The moral of the story? Put a saxophone solo in everything.
52. Foxes: "Sky Love"
Release Date: November 3
Album: The Kick (2022)
Genre: Dance Pop / Electropop
Foxes make love sound like this transformative, otherworldly being that consumes you and transports you straight to heaven. It's a beautiful bit of ecstasy, and it is exemplified perfectly through the masterful production and singing. Plus, the song is a straight bop. This is the kind of pop music I love the most.
51. Darkside: "Liberty Bell"
Release Date: December 21, 2020
Album: Spiral
Genre: Art Rock / Neo-Psychedelia / Krautrock
For as much of a banger as this song is, there's something disquietly eerie about it. Whether it be the vocal effect, the swinging guitar lick, the droning bass, the groovy drums or the ominous bell chime, the song gives this dark yet fascinating vibe. It's certainly one of the most entrancing singles of the year, and I cannot stop listening to it. It sounds like a spaghetti western set in space. Do with that info what you will.
50. LUMP: "Animal"
Release Date: May 5
Album: Animal
Genre: Art Pop / Folktronica
What a freaking groove! This is the kind of groove that will get your head bobbing. On top of that, the synths and overall production have such an amazing texture to them. It's captivating, dense and so sticky.
49. Clairo: "Blouse"
Release Date: June 10
Album: Sling
Genre: Singer-Songwriter / Chamber Folk
This is a gorgeous folk song about sexual objectification. The acoustic guitar is pretty, the hushed vocals are intimate, the lyrics strike a lovely chord and the string embellishments are a nice touch. It's cool to see Clairo go in this direction, because this is as beautiful as it is mature and thoughtful.
48. Open Mike Eagle & Armand Hammer: "Burner Account"
Release Date: September 17
Album: n/a
Genre: Abstract Hip Hop
This track is freaking COLD BLOODED! That beat is so dirty, and both the eagle and the hammer spit straight fire. The flows are impeccable, and the song makes me feel like I'm looting a grocery store and lighting the place on fire when I'm done. It's a banger, and I really hope this leads to an album.
47. Kississippi: "Big Dipper"
Release Date: May 12
Album: Mood Ring
Genre: Indie Pop
Appropriately, this song sounds like you're ascending to the stars and getting swallowed by the constellations. It's an amazing vibe, and the magical production and sweet vocals really sell the mood. Here's a tip for everyone: if your car connects to a college radio station, pay attention to it. Who knows? You might find something as good as this.
46. Nilüfer Yanya: “stabilise”
Release Date: November 9
Album: PAINLESS (2022)
Genre: Indie Rock
The guitar writing on this song is fantastic! I love how the guitar melody switches between major and minor scales in the verses, and it is complimented well by the electrifying drums. The vocal melody is also infectious, giving this song a wonderful sense of energy. I've never heard of this artist before, but after this song, I cannot wait for the album.
45. Indigo De Souza: "Hold U"
Release Date: July 21
Album: Any Shape You Take
Genre: Indie Rock
This is such a sweet, charming and groovy love song. The lyrics are simple, yet they convey so much emotion. The riff that plays after the chorus is so good, and it really gets me dancing. I also love how the song builds into the crowd vocals at the bridge. It's a highly gratifying song, and it makes me happy every time I listen to it.
44. YUKIKA: "Loving you"
Release Date: September 20
Album: n/a
Genre: K-Pop / Dance Pop / Synthpop
I didn't know I needed K-Pop disco in my life, but now that I have it, I'm not complaining. This song is an absolute bop from front to back. There is great use of strings and funky bass, and Yukika's vocals are captivating to listen to. I've never been drawn to K-Pop all that much, but this is fantastic.
43. Radiohead: "If You Say the Word"
Release Date: September 7
Album: KID A MNESIA
Genre: Art Rock
You know you're a legendary band when your B-sides are incredible. This extra track from Radiohead's Kid A / Amnesiac sessions is eerie, calming and downright gorgeous. I love the sound design on this track. It makes me feel like I'm sinking down to the bottom of a lake in the still of night. It's haunting beauty, and it reminds why Radiohead, too, is in my top 3 favorite bands/artists of all time.
42. Amber Mark: "Foreign Things"
Release Date: August 23
Album: Three Dimensions Deep (2022)
Genre: Alternative R&B / Neo-Soul
What a freaking BOP! This is, like, the perfect cross between pop and neo-soul. The piano lick that plays throughout the verses is so tasty, and Amber's vocals are phenomenal. It's such a fun, carefree track that I cannot get enough of. I am pumped for her debut album.
41. The Weather Station: "Parking Lot"
Release Date: February 2
Album: Ignorance
Genre: Art Pop / Sophisti-Pop
This is vibrancy at its finest. The steady drum groove is great, Tamara's hushed vocals are pleasing on the ears, the string and piano melodies are gorgeous and the way the track builds is pure musical ecstasy. While I still prefer 2020's "Robber" as a single, this song is incredible, and it fills me with a warm feeling inside.
40. Cautious Clay: "Karma & Friends"
Release Date: April 15
Album: Deadpan Love
Genre: Alternative R&B / Neo-Soul
This song has absolutely NO RIGHT being this buttery smooth. The beat is so watery, yet it sounds pristine and lovely. Clay's vocals ride the production so well, and they sound so pretty. And that chorus SLAPS me in the face every time I hear it, and I cannot get enough. If there's any indication that Cautious Clay is going to have a fruitful career, it's this song.
39. Orla Gartland: "You're Not Special, Babe"
Release Date: July 7
Album: Woman on the Internet
Genre: Indie Pop
I think this song has my favorite chorus writing of the year. I love how the music gets bright and peppy during the chorus, as well as how Orla sings the title of the song. On top of that, I think this track has a creative execution of the quiet-loud verse to chorus dynamic, as the track subtly builds with each verse. It's a great pop tune, and it deserves a lot more recognition than it's getting.
38. Noname: "Rainforest"
Release Date: February 26
Album: Factory Baby (TBA)
Genre: Conscious Hip Hop
Leave it to Noname to give us a great, relaxing, chilled out rap number with thoughtful political commentary on racism and capitalism. Her flows are as impeccable as ever, and I love the guitar driven beat. While I'm not entirely sure the music is inspired by Samba, it sounds that way to me, and I love it. Can't wait for the upcoming album.
37. The Mountain Goats: "The Slow Parts on Death Metal Albums"
Release Date: May 11
Album: Dark In Here
Genre: Indie Folk
The biggest reason why this song is so high up is the outro. The jam band ending is groovy, enchanting and beautiful, mixing elements of folk, R&B and jazz, and it sounds so wonderful. This song truthfully has one of my favorite outros of the entire year. The rest of the song is great as well. It's a relaxing, jazzy ballad that I can picture anyone enjoying.
36. Bo Burnham: “Welcome to the Internet”
Release Date: June 5
Album: Inside
Genre: Comedy / Synthpop
The criticism of the overwhelming overabundance of internet is not a new concept. However, by writing the song from the point of view of the internet and portraying it as a supervillain, Bo Burnham created a hilarious, tragic and terrifying track that stands as the best, smartest and most creative moment of his entire special.
35. Blu: "People Call Me Blu(e)"
Release Date: September 3
Album: The Color Blu(e)
Genre: West Coast Hip Hop / Jazz Rap
This is some good ass old school sounding hip hop brought into 2021. The beat is funky and creative, with a nice turntable sample, and Blu's verses are quite clever, especially with how he incorporates his name/the color into the lyrics. On top of that, his flow is the perfect mixture of chilled out and commanding. It's a great rap cut, and I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys 90s hip hop.
34. Caroline Polachek: "Bunny is a Rider"
Release Date: July 14
Album: TBA
Genre: Electropop / Contemporary R&B
Caroline Polachek proved on Pang that she is excellent at crafting moody yet gorgeous bops, and this track is no exception. I love the little bass riff that plays throughout the track. The use of percussion and synths make this atmospheric tone shine a lot with brightness. On top of that, the vocals are incredible, and that hook is so catchy. I hope that a full length album comes from this, because this might be my new favorite song of hers.
33. Billie Eilish: "Your Power"
Release Date: April 29
Album: Happier Than Ever
Genre: Folk Pop / Singer-Songwriter
I love hearing this side of Billie. Her voice suits this kind of moody, down trodden folk music so well, and this is her best ballad yet. The acoustic guitar is recorded so damn well, and the subtle percussion in the background is lovely. This also manages to be one of Billie's best showcases of her lyrical ability ever. The commentary on predators hits like a ton of bricks. It's a brilliant spot on her latest album.
32. Isaiah Rashad: "Headshots (4r Da Locals)"
Release Date: June 18
Album: The House Is Burning
Genre: Hip Hop
While I wasn't a big fan of Isaiah Rashad's new album, I LOVE this song. The beat is moody and atmospheric, yet it has an amazing groove to it. Isaiah rides the beat so well with his flows, and that hook... it is pure electricity. After I first heard this song, I kept singing "okay, you caught me by surprise in my brand new whip" to myself for months. It is a fantastic cut.
31. Adele: "Easy On Me"
Release Date: October 14
Album: 30
Genre: Adult Contemporary / Pop Soul
Nobody does a piano ballad like Adele. There's a certain kind of emotional weight she has with each ballad, and this is just wonderful. The piano playing is gorgeous, and Adele's voice is as powerful and as soulful as ever. However, the maturity and the self-reflection of the track is what sells it for me. This song, as well as this album, is Adele at her most vulnerable. I'm so glad she's back.
30. Faye Webster: "I Know I'm Funny haha"
Release Date: May 18
Album: I Know I'm Funny ha ha
Genre: Alt-Country / Singer-Songwriter
This is the perfect song for a late night drive. It's somber guitar chords are perfectly backing Faye's forlorn singing, as well as her deeply personal and lonely lyrics. There's a special kind of sadness that this track brings, and the emotional potency truthfully enhances this track to make it a standout on her latest album. At the end of the day, this song makes me want to be Faye's friend.
29. Illuminati Hotties: "MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA"
Release Date: April 21
Album: Let Me Do One More
Genre: Dance Punk / Post-Punk
I feel like I should hate this song. The snotty vocals, the simple guitar chords, the stupid as hell chorus... it has elements that I should absolutely despise. However, I love this song. This song is insane. There is so much fire to all of the performances, and the vocals make the track sound like it's being performed by a Cartoon Network supervillain. It's chaotic as hell, but it works so well.
28. Porter Robinson: "Look at the Sky"
Release Date: January 27
Album: Nutrure
Genre: Synthpop / Progressive House
Porter Robinson caught my attention in 2020 when he released "Something Comforting." Then, he completely pulled me in with this track. It's such an uplifting song, and the lyrics hit hard for me, especially with the close of 2021. On top of that, the production is just so good. The electronics mesh with the organic instruments so well, and Porter's vocals sound fantastic. It's one of the most powerful songs of the entire year, and I highly recommend it for those wanting to get their spirits lifted.
27. Olivia Rodrigo: "driver's license"
Release Date: January 8
Album: SOUR
Genre: Pop / Singer-Songwriter
I don't think any song in 2021 grew on me like this one did. Around the time when it was first released, I thought it was whiny, melodramatic trash. Now, however... yeah, it's still whiny and melodramatic, but I've fallen in love with it. The lyrics are sharp, the production is gorgeous and Olivia's vocals are absolutely stunning. It captures a teenage breakup in a genuine and even heartbreaking way, and it's wonderful. This is one of those songs that I will belt to at the top of my lungs anytime I hear it on the radio.
26. Yola: "Starlight"
Release Date: July 1
Album: Stand For Myself
Genre: Country Soul / Pop Soul
Speaking of stunning vocals, DAYUM! What a powerhouse! There is so much soul and heart to her singing, and it is backed perfectly by the cross of country, soul and rock in the instrumentation. It's a transcendent kind of sound, and Yola pulls it off so well. For those that are into country and soul, do not miss out on this artist.
25. Aesop Rock: "Long Legged Larry"
Release Date: March 19
Album: n/a
Genre: Abstract Hip Hop / Children's Music
This is a children's rap about a bullfrog that jumps really high. It's unironically one of the best rap songs of the year. I'm not joking. The beat manages to be both grimey and funky with that infectious as hell guitar loop. Aesop Rock's flow is as impeccable as always, and his storytelling is on point. It's funny, it's cute, it's entertaining... I love this children's song, and I'm 23 years old.
24. Kylie Minogue & Jesse Ware: "Kiss of Life"
Release Date: October 28
Album: DISCO (Guest List Edition)
Genre: Disco / Dance Pop
The two queens of modern disco have come together to bless us with this truly transcendent piece of dance pop. The groove is insatiable, the chorus is catchy, Kylie and Jesse have amazing chemistry and the song makes me dance every time I listen to it. Few songs give me a feeling of pure musical ecstasy like this one. Seriously, this song gives me hot flashes. I think I need help.
23. Snail Mail: "Valentine"
Release Date: September 15
Album: Valentine
Genre: Indie Rock
This is easily one of the most electrifying indie rock songs of the year. I think this track has a practically perfect progression, with quite possibly the best example of the quiet verse/loud chorus dynamic. The songwriting is strong, the performances are explosive and Lindsey's vocals demand so much attention. This is a quality rock tune, and it stands as the biggest highlight on the latest Snail Mail record.
22. JPEGMAFIA: "TRUST!"
Release Date: August 31
Album: LP!
Genre: Experimental Hip Hop / Cloud Rap
JPEGMAFIA once again proves that he is one of the most creative, forward thinking rappers, songwriters and producers working today on this track. The beat manages to be soothing, beautiful and chaotically disjointed all at the same time. Peggy's bars are clever and hilarious, and he sounds so great over the production. It's barely over two minutes, but there is so much put into this, and I love it.
21. Anjimile & Jay Som: "In Your Eyes (Reflection)"
Release Date: April 13
Album: Reunion (EP)
Genre: Chamber Folk
This in an orchestral version of Anjimile's 2020 track of the same name. In my opinion, this updated version surpasses the original in every way. Anjimile's vocals are more expressive and passionate this time around, and the song has a better, more natural flow. And those strings... holy crap. They are astoundingly gorgeous. The orchestration is intricate and dense, and each instrument is played to perfection. This is one of the prettiest tracks of the year, and it captivates me with each listen.
20. Lucy Dacus: "Hot & Heavy"
Release Date: April 13
Album: Home Video
Genre: Indie Rock / Singer-Songwriter
For the longest time, this was in my top 5 tracks. That's how tough making this list was. Anyways, this is my number one driving song of the year. The driving, rocking beat, as well as the way it builds, is perfect for going on a road trip. Lucy's vocals are pleasing to listen to, and the vulnerability she shows in her lyricism is as poetic as it is smart and well written. It's an incredible piece of indie rock that showcases why Lucy Dacus is a fantastic artist.
19. Japanese Breakfast: "Be Sweet"
Release Date: March 2
Album: Jubilee
Genre: Synthpop / New Wave
Here's a tip: if you ever want me to dance like a fool, play this song. It's an utter bop, and it is so much fun to listen. I love the funky, new wave inspired instrumentation. It has an insatiable groove to it that's as sweet as the song title. Michelle Zauner's vocals are charismatic and charming, and her lyricism is biting and clever. This is some amazing ass synthpop right here, and it has stuck with me ever since I first heard it at the start of the year.
18. BROCKHAMPTON: "BUZZCUTT (feat. Danny Brown)"
Release Date: March 24
Album: ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE
Genre: Experimental Hip Hop
The boys are back! I've been a fan of this group since Saturation, and with this song, it was so refreshing to see them get wild again. This time around, however, their sound seems much more refined, resulting in one of their best bangers ever. The siren beat is insane, Kevin's verse is one of his most explosive, the hook is catchy, Danny Brown's verse is killer and the outro is a nice piece of jazzy ambiance. This is a killer cut. Glad to see them together again.
17. St. Vincent: "Down"
Release Date: May 10
Album: Daddy's Home
Genre: Synth Funk / Art Rock / New Wave
St. Vincent embracing 70s psychedelic rock and pop was a stroke of stylistic genius, and this song is a perfect example as to why. This is a hard hitting bop about a revenge fantasy that a person experiencing domestic abuse would have. The writing is stark and clever, and the instrumentation is drenched in psychedelic goodness. It's a fun track that also manages to be powerful in its message. It's great, and it stands out as one of my favorite songs on the album.
16. Christian Lee Hutson: "Strawberry Lemonade"
Release Date: November 4
Album: TBA
Genre: Folk / Singer-Songwriter
Damn. What a ballad this is. I hadn't heard of Christian before this song, but after hearing this, I need to listen to more. This is incredible. The instrumentation is sweet, somber and pretty, and Christian's storytelling is as witty as it is tragic and heartbreaking. Plus, the instrumental build of the outro is magical. It's noisy, grand, gorgeous and reaches a satisfying peak. This song hits me like a ton of bricks, and I cannot wait to see what he will do next.
15. Hiatus Kaiyote: "Red Room"
Release Date: April 27
Album: Mood Valiant
Genre: Neo-Soul
This is easily the best vibe track of the entire year. No question about it. With this track, Hiatus Kaiyote take a simple musical idea and subtly build on it over its duration. There isn't a whole lot of change up, but the ways instrumentation is added and vocal effects are used make this song unforgettable. It's silky smooth and gets stuck in your head easily in the best way possible. Nai Palm's vocals are as expressive as ever, and the way she rides the melody is sick as hell. This is an amazing example of how subtlety can result in an incredible piece of music.
14. Genesis Owusu: "Gold Chains"
Release Date: February 19
Album: Smiling with No Teeth
Genre: Neo-Soul
In a clever spin on the gold chains motif constantly found in rap songs, Genesis Owusu talks about how money and fame weighs one down and acts as a prison. It's genius writing, and "well it looks so gold, but I feel so cold inside these chains" might be the single greatest lyric from any song released this year. Aside from that, the song is straight fire. The beat is incredibly smooth and brilliantly contrasts with the skittering guitar leads, and Genesis's flow is impeccable. He is one of the year's best new artists, and this song is a prime example as to why.
13. Julien Baker: "Hardline"
Release Date: January 13
Album: Little Oblivions
Genre: Indie Rock / Singer-Songwriter
I commend Julien Baker for how vulnerable she is with her depression and her past drug addiction on this song. It's not easy to be this open, but she gives herself to us in a very naked fashion. As a result, her songwriting is fantastic. It's tragic, it's heartbreaking, it's poetic and it's so good. As for the music, it blows my mind every time I listen to it. The way she takes us on a journey through these mellow guitar passages, and the way they lead to those enchanting explosions... they get me every time. It sounds like what floating feels like. It's an incredible piece of music, and it stands as my favorite indie rock song of the year.
12. Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine: "Cimmerian Shade"
Release Date: September 8
Album: A Beginner's Mind
Genre: Indie Folk
I never thought I would hear a folk ballad about the film Silence of the Lambs sung from the perspective of Buffalo Bill talking to Jonathan Demme, the director of the film, about fate. I also never thought that this kind of song would be as beautiful and as sincere as it is, because this thing is GORGEOUS! The acoustic guitars are so elegant, playful and pretty, and the vocals are quite pleasing to listen to. The track has such a relaxing, calming vibe, and I find myself listening to this to get myself into a zen mode. It's beautiful, and I highly recommend it to any folk loving film buffs out there.
11. Spellling: "Turning Wheel"
Release Date: June 2
Album: The Turning Wheel
Genre: Art Pop / Baroque Pop
This song sounds like a triumphant piece of unity. The bright, dense orchestration has a heavenly enchanting quality to it that gives me a sense of hope for the future. Plus, the lyrics talk about finding the pure, simple moments in the world and not focusing on violence and anger. With that, along with the group vocals, it's a message that is given to us in such a genuine and sweet way. It's a beautiful, uplifting piece of music, and I find my heart swelling with love and happiness with each listen. With how difficult the 2020s have been, we need a song like this. It hurts not putting this in the top ten.
10. BADBADNOTGOOD & MF DOOM: "The Chocolate Conquistadors"
Release Date: December 18, 2020
Album: Grand Theft Auto Online: The Cayo Perico Heist (Videogame Soundtrack)
Genre: Jazz Fusion / Abstract Hip Hop
Jazz rock outfit BADBADNOTGOOD and legendary rapper MF DOOM came together to create this 7 minute behemoth. The atmospheric intro, along with DOOM rapping in Spanish, grabs your attention with a strong force. And then, as soon as that groove hits, you are in for a funky, multiphased and mind blowing jam. DOOM's flows and lyricism are impeccable as always, and the jazz instrumentation is so intricate and so much fun. I also love the instrumental passage that takes up the entire second half of the track. It's an insane song. It bops, it bangs, it jams, it rips... it does everything that makes a song great and more. Listen to it if you haven't already. RIP MF DOOM. You are missed.
9. Kero Kero Bonito: "The Princess and the Clock"
Release Date: February 24
Album: Civilisation II (EP)
Genre: Electropop / Synthpop
This was the first song I listened to in 2021 that I fell absolutely head over heels in love with. Everything about this track is pure magical perfection. I love the bright, shimmery synths, as well as the techno bass licks that fill the track. There's a mystical aura about the track that I find heavenly and enchanting. The storytelling is brilliant, the song progression and structure is fantastic and the vocals, while dry, are full of personality and character. This is one of the most charming songs of the year. It's bright and captivating with some incredible production. Plus, it made me go back and listen to Kero Kero Bonito's older work simply on the notion that this track is so good. That's probably the highest compliment I can give it.
8. Magdalena Bay: "Secrets (Your Fire)"
Release Date: August 11
Album: Mercurial World
Genre: Dance Pop / Contemporary R&B
Behold: my favorite pop song of the year! Magdalena Bay have made one of the catchiest, danceable and groovy songs of the year with this track, and I cannot get enough of it. There is so much personality and pure color in every ounce of this track. From the vocals to the intricate and highly textured production to the simple yet catchy lyricism, this song is vibrant in every way possible. It mixes 80s pop and R&B with 2020s production and creativity in the absolute best way possible. If there's any justice in the world, this track should make Magdalena Bay huge in the pop sphere, because this is pure magic.
7. Tyler, The Creator: "LUMBERJACK"
Release Date: June 16
Album: Call Me If You Get Lost
Genre: Hardcore Hip Hop / West Coast Hip Hop
Leave it to Tyler to give us the biggest banger of the year. This song is a little over two minutes long, yet it's filled to brim with pure heat. The skittering piano sample makes the beat hit so hard, and the posse background noise makes the track chaotic in the best way possible. Tyler's flows are on point as always, as he gives us some fantastic braggadocios bars and some hilarious one liners. "Shoutout to my mother and my father, didn't pull out" is one of the best lines put in any rap song this year. Also, the inclusion of DJ Drama as the hypeman is pure genius. This is Tyler at his banger best.
6. James Blake: "Life Is Not The Same"
Release Date: August 19
Album: Friends That Break Your Heart
Genre: Art Pop / Alternative R&B
This is haunting. James Blake created such a dour breakup song here. Everything from the dissonant vocal harmonies to the somber piano chords brings about this pure sadness. Combine that with the lo-fi drum loop and James's emotive crooning and lyricism, and you have one of the most powerful ballads of the year. It's depressing, but it is absolutely gorgeous. As sad as this song is, I could listen to it all day simply because of how beautiful it is. Definitely check this out, especially if you're in a sad mood.
5. Injury Reserve: "Knees"
Release Date: August 11
Album: By the Time I Get to Phoenix
Genre: Experimental Hip Hop / Experimental Rock
On June 29, 2020, rapper and one of the founding members of Injury Reserve, Stepa J. Groggs, passed away. He died early in the recording sessions of their latest album. "Knees" was the first song they released since the passing, and you can tell how hard they are grieving. The beat is disjointed, choppy and heavily glitchy. The verses are all over the place, bordering on flat out incoherency. All of this culminates into one of the most fascinating, disorienting, sad and beautiful pieces of music 2021 has to offer. Everything about this song feels like an expulsion of anger and grief, and I believe no song achieves the same feelings quite like this one. This song won't be for everybody, and there are days where I have a hard time listening to it myself, but it is a brilliant piece of music, and everybody should listen to it at least once. RIP Stepa J. Groggs. You are missed.
4. Black Midi: "Slow"
Release Date: April 28
Album: Cavalcade
Genre: Jazz Rock / Avant-Prog
I could've picked any of the singles this band released this year to be on the list. And while I love both "John L" and "Chondromalacia Patella," I ultimately went with "Slow." This song is an insane, mind bending cross between rock, prog and jazz. It's winding, multiphased structure manages to be captivating throughout, and the performances are all electrifying and impressive. There are two distinct reasons as to why I picked this single over the others. One is that guitar lick. It's probably the biggest ear worm Black Midi have on their entire album, and I love the way it drops from major to minor after each measure, as well as how it morphs over the course of the song. The second reason why I picked this song is the lyrical theme. This song is about waiting for death and getting bored because the process is taking so long. I love this concept. I find the idea of getting tired of waiting for death fascinating, especially as someone who thinks about death more often than he should. But that's besides the point. In any case, this is an insane and fantastically performed piece of music. Again, it's not for everybody, but those who are patient and openminded will find a lot to love with this song.
3. Silk Sonic: "Leave The Door Open"
Release Date: March 5
Album: An Evening with Silk Sonic
Genre: Pop Soul / R&B
I also could have picked any of the Silk Sonic singles to be on this list. While "Skate" and "Smokin' Out the Window" are both fantastic songs, there's something about "Leave The Door Open" that just hits me. I love the smooth, glossy instrumental and how it is drenched in 70s soul. It's incredibly sexy and beautiful. The production sounds fantastic. However, the biggest star is the vocals. Not only do Bruno and Anderson sound great, but they sound great together. Their chemistry is on point, and their vocals are insane. Anderson's smooth, raspy singing carries the verses so well, and hearing Bruno belt on the choruses is orgasmic. These two fit together so well that I can't imagine this song without one or the other. This is a beautiful, soulful jam that I will be returning to for many years to come.
2. Sharon Van Etten & Angel Olsen: "Like I Used To"
Release Date: May 20
Album: n/a
Genre: Heartland Rock / Singer-Songwriter
These two ladies have the AUDACITY to release a collaborative one-off single out of the blue! How DARE they?! No, but seriously, "Like I Used To" is the best rock song of the year, as well as my favorite collaboration of the year. I love how big the production is, even though the song itself is quite simple. There's a booming effect with certain hits of the guitars and drums that sounds so satisfying. Both Sharon and Angel sound fantastic, and their singing compliments each other so well. I also think the songwriting and lyric writing are superb. The structure of the tune is solid, and the lyrics are full of charm. The first chorus in particular is very relatable for me, as an introvert myself. This is truly a special kind of song that gives me so much euphoria with each listen. It's big, it's beautiful and it's everything that I love about music.
1. Little Simz: "Introvert"
Release Date: April 21
Album: Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
Genre: Conscious Hip Hop / UK Hip Hop
Hey, speaking of introvert...
You wanna know how good the Little Simz album is? Any one of the singles she released this year could have been at the number one spot (or in the top ten, at the very least). It was difficult choosing which single to put here, but I simply had to go with "Introvert." It's an epic, gorgeous, powerful moment, perfectly creating the tone and central themes she gives us in her album. In six minutes, Simbi has created a song touching on politics, money, society, death, inner turmoil, self worth, introversion and more. Her poetry is fantastic, and her flows are impeccable. Not only that, but the production... wow. Stunning. The use of horns, strings, guitar, those heavy ass drums... AHHH! It sounds so good! This is one of those songs that only comes out every few years. It's an absolute masterpiece from front to back. No song on this list comes close to me in terms of quality and in terms of my love for a 2021 single. "Introvert" is easily my number one single of 2021.
Well, this was a nightmare to write! I need a break... Thank you for reading. Next up is my Top 20 Albums of 2021. Get ready!
